Among our film picks for this month are two former AJFF Selects, a summer blockbuster, and a Netflix Original about a comedy great.
This former AJFF Selects follows the titular Menashe, a sweet grocery store clerk who is struggling to make ends meet and parent his young son, Rieven, following the death of his wife, Leah. Inspired by real events, and performed entirely in Yiddish by a cast of mostly non-professionals, the film is the fiction feature debut of veteran documentarian Joshua Z. Weinstein, who adds authenticity to this intimate tale of family and belonging.

The B-Side: Elsa Dorfman's Portrait Photography
Elsa Dorfman, a self-described “nice Jewish girl from Boston,” is profiled by her longtime friend and renowned filmmaker, Errol Morris. From her early years in New York City in the late ’50s as a single woman, working as a secretary at the publisher Grove Press, to the beginnings of her friendship with poet Allen Ginsberg, a lifelong friend, a narrative emerges as rich as the subjects Dorfman captured in her own work.
Jerry Before Seinfeld
Says Seinfeld, "I've made my first Netflix stand up special about how I got started in comedy in the 70's. It busts out September 19." The Netflix original will showcase the legendary comic’s recent set at The Comic Strip in New York, a club that helped launch his career. It will also incorporate never-before-seen material, including childhood videos and legal pads with every joke he’s written since 1975.

The Wedding Plan
This charming romantic comedy and former AJFF Selects from acclaimed writer-director Rama Burshtein (Fill the Void) tells the story of a jilted bride who decides to keep her wedding date, trusting that God will provide her with a husband in time. Nominated for nine Israeli Academy Awards, the film is the winner of Best Actress and Best Screenplay honors, and claimed Best Actress prize at the Haifa International Film Festival.
After 75 years, Wonder Woman received her her big screen debut and became the highest grossing superhero origin film at the domestic box office ever. With a 92% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, it's clear the film is a hit on every level, including much love and fanfare for Israeli actress and star of the film, Gal Gadot. The film revolves around (you guessed it) an Amazon princess (Gal Gadot) living an idyllic life on an island occupied only by female warriors. Things are interrupted when a pilot (Chris Pine) crash-lands nearby. After rescuing him, she learns of World War I and vows to use her superpowers to restore peace.
