About The Film
Latvia’s international Oscar entry, this gripping, ominous drama tells the true story of blue-collar worker Žanis Lipke—dubbed Latvia’s Schindler—honored for his courageous deeds during WWII. Žanis and wife Johanna (Artūrs Skrastiņš and Ilze Blauberga) appear unlikely heroes, saddled with hardship under Soviet and Nazi occupations. Working at a German military depot, he smuggles illegal goods for extra income. When Jews from a nearby ghetto are transported into forced-labor camps, Žanis embarks on a covert mission to save them from certain death, his motivations ambiguous. Nominated for 12 Latvian Academy Awards, with wins for Best Director, Cinematography, Production Design and Supporting Actress.
